The kids ideas on the pastoral ministry
What will daddy teach everybody? Teach them how to be good and the words that he says. Be kind and be grateful and speak nicely to your friends and family. He gets his words from God. And God helps him to heal up when he gets owies.
What do you think is daddy's favorite bible story? A God story that says "I love you God and God loves everybody. " He has lots of bible stories on his shelves.
Was it hard for daddy to become a pastor? Yeah, he graduated. He had to wear a hat and it was a long time waiting for daddy to be done.
Was it hard for lily to wait for daddy to be done? Yes! I really love him and he loves me. I had to go with Nana and play around when we waited for daddy, and we colored, that was fun.
How many people helped our family when daddy was at school? One, two, three, four, five..... too many to count! I am so happy because they loved us and they took care us and some came to our house. "Thank you for helping us."
What will you call daddy when you see him in Church. I say Hi daddy welcome back to your work. Then I say daddy can you please come back home?
Timmy: Tell me what you think about daddy being a Pastor? I think he's going to be a pastor because he wants to be a pastor. Maybe he wants to be a pastor because he likes to preach.
Is daddy a good preacher? Yeah! What does he preach about? Jesus! Jesus loves us. He also went to school to learn how to preach.
What do you think daddy had to do in school? I'mmm not sure, I don't know. I know he had to work hard.
How long was daddy in school for? The whoooole year! Did you like having daddy go to school? No, because he just takes too long. And he has to work every day.
Do you like that daddy is going to be a pastor? No, because I don't like him wearing the stall thing around his neck but then everyone knows that he is a pastor. One thing I like about daddy being a pastor is that he really cares about God and helps other people.
Is daddy a good daddy? He's a great daddy because he plays swords with me and he might build me a tree house.Daddy is good because he wants to see how much money it would cost to buy a tree house.
What is daddy's favorite bible story? Noah's ark!
God's May Flowers Are Blooming Everywhere
The colors of are new chapter in life is now in bloom. With the excitment of knowing we will be here in Rockton for a while we can now continue to plant roots and nourish what we have already planted here this past fall. Brown boxes can now be opened and cherished things can now be put out for the Sunlight to shine down on them creating prisms of colors all around. Setting new goals and watching How the Good Lord will guide us in achieving them adds the enthusiastic colors of pink and yellow. Still we need to remember the bulbs we planted that brought us here today. The Friendships we've made, like tulips, will forever blossom beautiful colors as the connections made in St. Louis will always be close to our hearts. And even though days may pass may our prayers be heard to help us keep in contact and watered in God's love of true freindship.
Wow, I'm not usually such a creative writer, but I felt the colors all around me as the sun shone down on me today. I reflect on things that the Lord has blessed our lives with and the blessings are too much to count. We are so grateful for all that has been done for us these past four years. We really would not have made it if it were not for all of our friends and family. God has made it possible for Paul to be able to go to school and still care for and love his family. I am very proud of him for all that he as worked so hard to become. Yes he has graduated and soon will be ordained as a Pastor, but he has grown much more than that. He has become a man of God not just as a Pastor, but as a father, a husband, and a friend. Whether in a Church or at home or an airplane hanger he is wanting to share God's love with everyone he meets. And to everyone out there that may be reading this please know that you do not have to go to four years of the Sem to be this, You do not have to be a pastor to know all this, all you have to do is Love the Lord your God because He Loves you first.

Christmas 2007
Reminded of God's Gifts to us; we look to His blessings in the coming year.
This year on vicarage brings our family closer to understanding how a life directed into ministry captures our whole family. We wait anxiously (more eagerly than we did for Santa) to receive the call documents on April 22, 2008 for our first call.
Uncle and Brother Nylan Gene Ficken died in Montana and was taken to his resting place in Adair, IOWA. The entire Ficken Family gathered together for the funeral. Dad (John) and Mom (Gretchen), John and Mona (far right) with their three children: Matthew, Sarah, Rachel (all living in Colorado), Pastor Dave and Kris ((far left) living in Plover, Wisconsin), Vicar Paul and Nichole (middle) with their four children: Timothy, Lily, Lucy, Nathaniel (all living in Rockton, Illinois).
We fondly remember Uncle Gene as an inspiration of courage and fortitude. Uncle Gene died from complications associated with Parkinson's Disease. We remember his excellent mechanical skills ever working as he fixed and maintained equipment on a ranch in Montana. Through the 20 years that he was in Montana he reached out to many people in the community who grew to love his kind heart as well as his expertise. We certainly will miss him.
